On August 1823, the first Indian war West of the Mississippi took place. A combined force of more than 1,000 US Infantry men, mountain men, and allied Sioux Indians, commanded by Lt. Col. Henry Leavenworth, attacked two Arikara villages. Their warriors were accused of having killed employees of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company unprovoked.
